Meet Great River Community Credit Union
Cindy Stephens, chief operations officer at Great River Community Credit Union, was hired partly because she knew how to operate a personal computer which would be needed to process electronic transactions. In 1991, the credit union had made a total of six online transactions—for the entire year. Now, there are thousands of transactions posted every day.
“We’re becoming a cash-less society more and more every day. Hardly anyone carries around cash anymore. My Dad was a banker, and in the 80s he said we’d be a ‘cash-less society’ by the year 2000. Well, it’s taken a little longer than that, but he was close. I see it happening soon,” she said.
Great River Community Credit Union, located at 1426 N. 26th St., was founded as Electric Wheel Credit Union on June 10, 1959, when a charter to incorporate was approved by the director of the Illinois Department of Financial Institutions. In 1983, the name was changed to Quinco Credit Union to more accurately reflect their clientele of Quincy-based companies. In 1987, the charter was amended to allow anyone living in Adams County to become a member of the credit union, and the name was changed to Great River Community Credit Union.
